Description : Edinburgh Castle is a fortress that dominates the skyline of Edinburgh, Scotland, from its position atop the volcanic Castle Rock. Human habitation of the site date back as far as the 9th century BC, although the nature of early settlement is unclear. There is a royal palace here at least since the reign of David I in the 12th century, and the site continues to be a royal residence until the Union of the Crown in 1603.
From the 15th century castle housing the role of decline, and in the 17th century its main role is as a military base with great force. Recognized its importance as a historic monument of the 19th century, and a variety of recovery programs have been conducted since. As one of the most important fortress in the kingdom of Scotland, Edinburgh Castle was involved in a historical conflict, the War of Independence of Scotland in the 14th century, until the Jacobite Rising of 1745, and has been besieged, both successfully and unsuccessfully, on several occasions.
Some of these buildings pre-date the Lang Siege of the 16th century, when medieval fortress which largely destroyed by artillery bombardment. The exception is St Margaret's Chapel, the oldest building in Edinburgh, which originated from the beginning of the 12th century. Among other significant buildings castle is the Royal Palace, and the Hall beginning of the 16th century. The castle also houses the Scottish National War Memorial, and National War Museum of Scotland.
Although formally owned by the Department of Defense, most of the fort is now in the care of Historic Scotland, and is the most visited tourist attraction Scotland paid. The garrison was left in the 1920's, but there is still a military presence in the palace, ceremonial and administrative, and includes a number of regimental museums. This is the backdrop for the annual Edinburgh Military Tattoo and has become a recognizable symbol of Edinburgh and Scotland.
