Bronx Zoo made the news in August 2006 when they agreed to include the rare snow leopard beginner, Leo, into its breeding program. Cub 13-month-old was found stuck in mud after landslides in Naltar Valley in Pakistan. A landslide had killed the boy's mother. A Pakistani shepherd in the area found the boy's sister, but she died a week later because of malnutrition. He then handed the boy to the authorities of Pakistan to take care of him. Since there is no breeding program or a rehabilitation center for snow leopards in Pakistan, the authorities decided to send the child to the Bronx Zoo. Leopards will be returned to his place of birth after the construction of rehabilitation facilities in the Valley Naltar with cooperation from the United States.
